October is Mi’kmaw History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the rich history, vibrant culture, and enduring contributions of the Mi’kmaq people. The Miꞌkmaw (also known as Lꞌnuk), are the original Indigenous peoples of the traditional territory of Miꞌkmaꞌki. NSNMR encourages ongoing learning about Mi’kmaw history, culture and language, and recognizes the Peace and Friendship Treaties.
This year’s Mi’kmaw History Month theme, “Nepisulti’k” (We are Healing), is inspired by the teachings of Elder Murdena Marshall. The theme reflects Elder Murdena’s teachings of healing as a lifelong journey of individuals, families, communities, and Nations. NSNMR recognizes the importance of fostering culturally safe health-care environments and advancing reconciliation in the regulation of nursing and midwifery as part of our commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging, and anti-racism.
